253. A catalogue of that magnificent and truly valuable collection of pictures, the production of the great artists of the British School, known as the collection of the Shakspeare Gallery : formed under the spirited directions, and with the unbounded expence, by those distinguished promoters of the fine arts, the Messrs. Boydell's : these justly-admired pictures, in which the poetry of our Great Bard has furnished occasion for a proud display of national talent, comprises many of the happiest efforts of such deceased artists as the immortal Sir Joshua Reynolds, Wright of Derby, Hodges, Romney, Hamilton, Wheatley, Kirk, Ramberg, and others, the rarity as well as the excellence of whose works, must insure them a distinguished place in the collection of the connoisseur : among the spirited performances of living genius, are the King Lear, by Mr. West : and various by Barry, Northcote, Opie, Tesham, Fuseli, Hoppner, Smirke, Stothard, Peters, Rigaud, Westall, Boydell, A. Kauffman : and that admirable set of cabinet pictures by Mr. Smirke : basso relievos, by the Hon. Mrs. Damer : and the Grand Alto Relievo, the Apotheosis of Shakspeare, by the late Thomas Banks, Esq. R.A. : many of the above pictures are of the cabinet size, and the remainder will be found worthy objects for the late saloons of the nobility and Gentry, or the Halls of Incorporate Bodies, or for Exhibitions in distant parts of the kingdom : the whole will be sold by auction, by Mr. Christie, on the premises, on Friday, May 17, 1805, and two following days, (Sunday excepted), at twelve o'clock, by order of the proprietor, without reserve.

284. A catalogue of the genuine and very capital cabinet of choice Italian, French, Flemish and English pictures, original drawings, and articles of ancient sculpture, of the late Hon. C. F. Greville, F. R. and A. S. &c. &c. &c. Dec. : which were collected by him with a design to illustrate the progress of painting, and its perfection by the Masters of the great Italian and other schools : in the former point of view they display a rare and highly curious series from Cimabue to Raphael : the specimens in which were selected from authentic situations, and many of them are cited in the biography of the authors of them : the perfection of the act is exemplified in various chef d'oeuves of the finest class and in the purest condition : of which the most distinguished are, by Correggio, a Head, a genuine fresco : Raphael, Venus, Vulcan and Cupid, a beautiful cabinet picture : S. Del Piombo, a portait : Baroccio, the Marriage of St. Catherine, a lovely gem : The Chess Players, Titian : Mars and Venus, P. Veronese : I. Carracci, a small Holy Family with Saints, an exquisite Bijou : N. A catalogue of a most superb, capital, and valuable collection of Italian, French, Flemish and Dutch pictures : the property of a Gentleman, highly distinguished for his taste in the arts : the whole selected with unbounded liberality, and now brought from his seat at Fonthill, in Wiltshire : consisting of inestimable works of the following great masters, viz : Spagnoletto, A. Durer, Sa. Rosa, Guido, Murillo, D. Feti, C. Lorrain, Seb. Bourdon, Canaletti, Zuccarelli, Rembrandt, Ostade, Wouvermans, Both, V. Der Heyde, C. du Jardin, Ruysdael, Wynants, De Vlieger, Polemborgh, Teniers, V. der Meulen, Webber, Loutherbeourg : among the celebrated pictures in this collection, are the following distinguished and capital : the Rape of Deianira, by Paduanino, one of the noblest efforts of genius in the Venetian School, both for colouring and design : the Holy Family, by Murillo, a very elegant composition, full of grace and simplicity : the Death of Socrates, by S. Rosa : a Landscape with St. Francis preaching : and a sea port by ditto : and Lucretia, by Guido, very capital : amongst the moderns, are eight capital and much distinguished pictures of the Rake's Progress, by the immoral Hogarth, esteemed the finest of his works : a pair of elegant and splendid cabinets, with the subjects of Cupid and Psyche, painted by Smirke : also four tripods, or exquisite workmanship : which will be sold by auction, by Mr. Christie, at his Great Room, Pall Mall, on Saturday, February the 27th 1802, at twelve o'clock.
