Notes:: " At least three copies of the catalogue have the name "Mr. Crawford" written by hand on the title page, and one of them (MMNY) calls him "Mr. Crawford of Rotterdam" as does Buchanan (Memoirs, 1824, II, p.180). The latter also reprints the entire catalogue (pp.181-87), giving prices and buyers and adding that Crawford had resided for many years in Holland for business reasons. In spite of the attention given the sale at the time, relatively little has been written about the owner. He is identifiable with George Craufurd, Esq., a banker who lived for an extended period in Rotterdam and whose younger brother, James, was British consul there and for a time a partner in the same banking firm. George Craufurd had a small but very choice collection of Dutch pictures which he apparently acquired both in the Netherlands and Paris."--Getty provenance index databases.
