Edward Lear arrived in Calicut in October 1874 just as the monsoon began. He was warned about the dangers of contracting fever but stayed despite the pouring rain until the skies were clear enough to draw the laborers harvesting coconuts and bananas. He described the roads around Calicut as “of such redundant beauty one can hardly dream.” Gallery label for A Decade of Gifts and Acquisitions (Yale Center for British Art, 2017-06-01 - 2017-08-13)
