Owned by King Charles I, whose royal cipher “CR” is branded on the back, this topographical view of Richmond Castle in Yorkshire was part of a royal commission to the Flemish painter Alexander Keirincx for views of ten royal strongholds in Scotland and northern England. They are among the earliest topographical landscapes made in Britain and were hung together with views of other royal properties at Oatlands Palace in Surrey. The set was dispersed after Charles’s execution in 1649.
