Although the figures that appear in Cox's landscapes are generally drawn with great deftness and flair, figure subjects, as such, are rare in his work. The figures in his landscapes, as well as in the figure sketches that do exist, are generally rustic types, but he could create figures of great elegance, as can be seen in Windermere during the Regatta (cat. 57). Portrait studies by Cox are extremely unusual, but this head of a child shows that he could use the medium of watercolor to produce portraits of great charm and sensitivity.
