...This very remarkable and glorious Victory was gained over the French when their Army was Superiour to the Allies in number, and so strongly entrench'd, that their Entrenchments was more like a Citadell than a Camp. Their Left Wing was covered by a great thick Wood in which they had cast up many entrenchments, & posted their Infantry therin, and their Right was covered by another Wood & a thick Hedge which run along the same like a Chain & ye Access to their entrenchments was difficult by means of marshy ground before them. The Center of their Army was in a little plain with several entrenchments cast up one behind ye other, all defended in convenient parts with good artillery. The attack was made in three different places, it is impossible to express ye violence of ye fire on both sides. Besides the advantageous situation of ye French, they difended themselves like brave men, yet our Infantry surmounted these incredible difficulties, resisted ye fire which carried off whole Ranks, forced ye Intrenchments, drove the Enemy out of ye Wood, & drew up in order of Battle on ye Plain, where they charged them with fresh Valour, and not withstanding they were drawn up behind an entrenchment from whence they made a terrible fire on our Men, they were charged so briskly by the Allies that they Fled in disorder before us through another Wood, abandoning the Field of Battle, their Wounded, their Artillery, and Ammunition
