Alken was a prolific draughtsman, engraver, and painter of sporting subjects whose work often took serial form. Some of his prints were published under the pseudonym "Ben Tally-Ho!" He rode to hounds himself, and spent much time in the English mecca of foxhunting, Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. In all likelihood the present series shows episodes from a hunt in that part of the country.
