Bevan sketched and painted at various London horse markets, in this case Aldridge’s on Upper St. Martin’s Lane, near Leicester Square. The title of the work comes from the auctioneer’s description of the horse for sale: supposedly untroubled by the noises of the street, especially modern motor traffic, it will make a good horse for urban use, probably pulling a cab or delivery van. Its hunter clip, with the saddle area of its coat left longer than the rest, is the reminder of a former life in the country.
