Inscribed in pen and brown ink, entire sheet: "Vermillion - for Draperies & for all clear bright red | objects which are artificial such a colour painted | on Boats. Its brightness throws other red teints | into distance & must be therefore used in the | front grounds. | Burnt Umber. Used as a shadow to warm teints | of Earth & to Bt Sienna for front ground for | the general colour of earth when used thinly & | for dark touches in front ground. | Purple grey. made with Lake & Lamp Black | useful in grey barks of trees & rocks. when | mixed with Bt. Sienna it makes various browns | & mixed with Blue it m akes a grey [suitable?] | for middle distances. | Neutral teint, of Venetian Red & Indigo & | a little Lake good for cloudy skies & with | the addition of a little Blue & Lake forms a pearly | grey useful as a shadow to such clouds. | Dark warm green of Bt. Sienna, Gamboge & | Indigo - useful in front ground & for the shadows | of trees &c. | Warm green For trees & weeds. made of Bt. Sienna | & Gamboge & Less Blue than the Dark green | Olive green. of more Bt. Sienna & Gamboge added | to the above. good shadow to greens that are nearly yellow | Orange of Gamboge and Bt. Sienna. For [...] | [?] & to dilute the greens in order to vary | their depth - not to be used in the sky - | Roman ochre used for the purposes of Y. ochre | but better adapted to the warmth of color | in stone buildings. | Sepia useful in sketching. For shadows in | old wood - Barges, fences &c. & for dark | Drapery -- but not much used in finished | Drawings. Principally used instead of Indian | ink - being warmer."
