Academy | Hall of National Gallery | Hall of the Academy | Watercolour & Miniature [...] | Ante Room | Architecture | School of Painting | Great Room"; lower left to lower right: "Pall Mall East | A Recollection of the New RA. | 28 March 1837 | John Constable | Trafalgar Square | Passage into Castle St. | St. Martin's Church" Inscribed on mount by Alfred Tidey in pen and brown ink: "I called on Constable on March 28th 1837. He was | there working on his 'Arundel Castle,' and | seemed well satisfied with the results - of | his labours. He said while giving a touch | here and there with his Palette knife, and | retiring to see the effect, 'it is neither too | warm, nor too cold. Too light nor too dark | and this constitutes every thing in a Picture.' | I dined with him, and in the Evening on my | asking him about the then new R.A. he took a pen | and sketched the above plan, signed and | gave it me. | He died on the 31st three days after.
