Peter Turnerelli was born in Belfast to immigrants from northern Italy and, eschewing a path to the priesthood, chose to study sculpture in London and Rome, where he became familiar with the work of Antonio Canova. By 1801, Turnerelli had been appointed Sculptor in Ordinary to the royal family, thanks in part to the backing of Sir Thomas Lawrence and Benjamin West. The sitter of this animated bust has not been identified. Gallery label for installation of YCBA collection, 2016
