The sculptor Edward Hodges Baily is best remembered for his monumental statue of Horatio, Viscount Nelson, which was raised in two pieces to the top of William Railton's 150-foot column in London's Trafalgar Square on 6 November 1843. But in the early years of his long professional life, Baily produced numerous classicizing portrait busts of leading scientists, politicians, poets, and painters. In 1826, after the death of the sculptor John Flaxman, Baily succeeded him as the chief modeler and designer for the firm of Rundell, Bridge, and Rundell, goldsmiths to the king. He was also chief designer for the great Regency silversmith Paul Storr (ca. 1770-1844).
