Notes:
From the 1830s, pencils cut from solid pieces of softer grades of slate or soapstone were used by schoolchildren to write on tables cut from harder grades of slate. Slate pencils were available with the slate core unwrapped, wrapped in paper, or encased in wood like a lead pencil.
Three small drawing or writing slates, double sided, within wooden frames and bound together in a portable volume. The hinge is mounted into original roan backing; sides are enclosed in marbled boards. The inside of the front cover originally bore two leather loops for the insertion of a slate pencil (not present); only one of the loops remains. The first frame is inscribed in pen and black ink "Mr. Gibbs", possibly the name of a teacher. The slates bear faint traces of effaced writing exercises. The final slate is inscribed, in a young child's hand: Beaty Inson [?] loves Jack Bowman.
