- Notes:
- From the 1830s, pencils cut from solid pieces of softer grades of slate or soapstone were used by schoolchildren to write on tables cut from harder grades of slate. Slate pencils were available with the slate core unwrapped, wrapped in paper, or encased in wood like a lead pencil.
Two small drawing or writing slates, framed within decorative blind-tooled morocco, and bound into a small blind-tooled morocco binding. The front edges of the upper and lower boards have morocco loops in which to insert an accompanying slate pencil. The pencil is partially enclosed within a decorative paper wrapper on which is printed: made in Portugal. British Art Center copy has (contemporary?) writing on the first slate, along with a simple drawing of a house, both apparently in a child's hand. - Subject Terms:
