Album of pen and ink drawings of people and places in Wales and Cumbria, by an unidentified British traveler, perhaps a clergyman. The album appears to be the work of a single hand and is signed in one illustration G.C.T. Some of the people depicted may include the artist and his travelling companions. Some illustrations, especially views of scenic subjects, are full-page, while other pages contain many small sketches (often of heads). Every illustration is labeled, and some are accompanied by short anecdotes, many of which are of a comic nature. Only a handful of drawings are dated. Some pages also include a few lines of poetry in the spirit of the scene depicted. A drawing of the churchyard at Llanbedr, for example, is accompanied by the first line of Thomas Gray's "Elegy written in a Country Churchyard". Other authors quoted include Emerson, Longfellow, Charles Kingsley, and Frances Ridley Havergal.
The first half of the album contains drawings of people and places in Wales, particularly in the region of Gwynedd, dated from August 10 to August 13, 1880. There are illustrations of Llanbedr, Arthog falls, Cader Idris, the River Mawddach (with the artist's travelling party in a row boat), Dolgellau, and Barmouth, where the travelling party go swimming. The artist notes: "Bathing à la Barmouth. Machines? Nonsense! Antiquated notion! Give us the yellow sands and the bright blue sky". A few pages of drawings appear to have been made at a Church of England congress at Leicester, in September of 1880. A handful of churchmen are depicted, including Bishop Ryan, Canon Fergie, Louis Herschel, and Joseph Cooke; also depicted are the artist Hubert von Herkomer and the actor Samuel Brandram. The remaining sketches are of people and places in Cumbria (around 15 August 1881), including Arnside, Wordsworth's cottage at Rydal Mount, and the Fairy Steps rock formation at Beetham.
The artist appears interested in contemporary local fashions, especially "head gear". At least five pages depict numerous heads wearing many kinds of hats and caps, with short commentaries: "Possibly ugly, but undoubtedly stylish"; "Somewhat tolerably good looking"; "The 'Zulu Hat', cool & inexpensive". - Subject Terms:
