Manuscript short story within elaborate pictorial frames on two sheets, in pen and ink. The undated story is titled on the first sheet and signed on both sheets: Juliana del. (perhaps Juliana Horatia Ewing). The writing is in a neat, copperplate hand. The work, apparently original and unpublished, begins: "And the artist sat by his fireside and thought. He would make a beautiful picture to astonish the world, but he sighed often, for he could not find a subject ... Presently he saw a little beggar girl come along the street; she was very ragged, and her long golden hair was quite out of curl ...". The illustrated frames are very finished and detailed, depicting the artist and beggar girl in multiple iterations along with other aspects of the story, among lush natural settings, with fairies and angels. - Subject Terms:
