Notes:
Set of just under 200 small paper slips, rolled and inserted in a honeycomb pattern into a shallow box. Each slip consists of three printed quotations on various Christian themes. The first two quotations consist of one or two lines of Bible verse, with book, chapter, and verse noted. The second of these, printed in italics, is very frequently a Psalm. The third text consists of two to four lines from English hymns (titles not noted). A sample slip reads: "Be of good comfort, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.--Luke 8:48. / I will trust in the covert of Thy wings.--Psalm 61:4. / Heal us, Immanuel, here we are, Waiting to feel Thy touch; Deep wounded souls to Thee repair, And, Saviour, we are such."
Adjacent to the slips, in its own small compartment, are a pair of simple metal tweezers, with which to extract a single slip. The compartments for slips and tweezers are in the base of the publisher's original box. Boxes vary; see description of YCBA copies 1 and 2.
Collections of Bible verses such as these are commonly referred to as promise boxes. A Christian adherent would draw, read, and contemplate one verse each day.
BAC: British Art center copy 1 is in a blue box, hinged at the back. The box consists of blue paper over paper boards. The title and border are printed in gold on the top cover, alongside a color printed floral illustration. On the back of the box is printed (in gold): "Made in Great Britain (Published by A.P.S. London)."
BAC: British Art Center copy 2 is in a brown box; the tray containing the slips and tweezers slides out from the bottom edge. The box consists of brown paper over paper boards. The title and border are printed in black on the top cover, alongside a color printed floral illustration (different than the illustration in YCBA copy 1). On the back of the box is printed (in black): "Made in Great Britain ...".
