Bound in blind tooled red morocco with original brass catch and clasp; marbled edges. Pouch for pencil on lower edge of upper board and for loose sheets of paper on inside of lower board. Stationer's ticket of W. & J.P. Royston on inside of upper board.
Sketchbook, by Elizabeth Smith of the Grange, containing 190 graphite drawings (some unfinished) of various locations throughout England, drawn between 25 June 1822 and 20 May 1825. In addition to topographical views there are cottages, private houses, churches, castles, historic ruins, harbors, and even the Great Bed of Ware. All of the locations are identified and dated, and most of the views of private houses include the owner's name (e.g. "Mr. Vaughn's farm at Potters Barr on the Hatfield road Midx"). The drawings form a sequence of separate family tours. The first twelve drawings, dated 1822, are around the artist's own locality of Hertfordshire, Middlesex, and Essex, with a particular concentration on Enfield. Drawings 13-55, dated 1823, form a journey along the south coast, and include views of Leatherhead, Dorking, Horsham, Beachy Head, Pevensey Castle, Hastings (including Battle Abbey), Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells, where there is a view of the race-course. Drawings 56-96, 1824, encompass Kent, Surrey and Middlesex, including Guildford, Leatherhead, Waverley Abbey and Hatfield House. Drawings 97-175 form a tour through East Anglia and include Cambridge, Bury St. Edmunds, Ely, Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Southwold, Beccles, Bungay, Framlingham, Colchester and Dedham. Drawings 176-188, 1825, are of Berkshire and Hampshire. Finally, leaf 189 bears a watercolor of an apple dated Sept. 16, 1822. Many of the sketches contain small figures, often young ladies, with several drawings appearing to incorporate a figure of a young girl sketching, which may be a self-portrait.
