Pen and brown ink; red, blue, green, brown, black, yellow and purple wash over graphite.
Stitched, in pale blue silk covers stiffened with paper housed in a black-tooled dark red morocco style folder lined with white watered silk.
Manuscript sketchbook depicting clothing and dress in northern France from 1815 to 1817. The sketchbook was kept by Louisa Ridout and her husband Captain Cranstoun George Ridout while they were stationed in northern France during the British occupation that followed the Battle of Waterloo. The sketches are watercolors over graphite, generally one illustration per leaf, presumably all by Louisa Ridout, whose name is signed with the first sketch. She notes, in graphite, the location and date of each sketch and sometimes provides a brief caption. Longer captions, written in pen and ink, appear at the top of the page, and in many instances elaborate descriptions are written in the same manner on the verso of the facing page. These longer descriptions explain the circumstances of the encounters and give some account of the character of the people depicted. The captions and descriptions written in pen and ink appear to be by Captain Cranstoun George Ridout.
The sketches depict local citizens of various towns in northern France, including Eu (the setting of the majority of the sketches) as well as Dieppe, Wormhout, St. Omer, Hazebrouck, Flêtre, and Bailleul. They show the figures and dress of tradesmen as well as the Ridout's hosts and neighbors. Among those depicted are a "fish woman" at Dieppe, market women at Eu, two male musicians, a postilion (with large boots), a "Picard dandy," a servant woman, young girls skipping rope, clerics in a funeral procession, a waiting maid, and a woman making Valenciennes bobbin lace. Almost all of the individuals are shown wearing elaborate hats and headgear, of many varieties. - Subject Terms:
