Originally published in two parts, each part with identical illustrated title pages. The same illustration is used on the cover title to each part, where the title is additionally printed in white and followed by a statement of responsibility "By Derry Down Derry."
The original parts issued in illustrated drab paper covers, red linen backs and yellow endpapers.

Comprises two illustrated title leaves and 61 leaves of limericks. Lacking: There was an old man of the Hague, There was an old man of Kilkenny, There was a young lady of Bute, There was an old person of Chester, There was an old man of Coblenz, There was a young lady whose eyes, There was an old man of Leghorn, There was an old man of Peru, who watched his wife making a stew, There was an old man of Kamschatka, There was a young lady of Sweden, There was an old man of the south, and There was an old man of Calcutta.
BAC: British Art Center copy in two volumes, in original illustrated boards. Inscribed: "Ellinor, Charlotte, Susan, Ghita, and Edmund Hornby, from their affectionate cousin R.A.H."

Illustrated limericks, by Edward Lear; lithographed throughout. The copy described by Field comprises the two illustrated title leaves and 70 illustrated leaves of verse. Schiller (p. 117) describes 72 probable illustrated leaves of verse (in addition to the title leaves).
