Illustrated manuscript catalog of the armories of Maximilian I, comprised chiefly of illuminated drawings by Jörg Kölderer, court artist. The volume includes 63 drawings in pen and ink and watercolor. Text is written in German calligraphy, in pen and black ink, by Ludwig Stecher and Hans Kugler, scribes. The text names each weapon (or other subject) and frequently includes verse.
The present manuscript comprises a portion of the original manuscript prepared by Freysleben for Maximilian. Another portion is in the collections of the Bavarian State Library in Munich (Codex 222). The contents of the two portions supplement each other; they have the same size, calligraphy, and paper. A complete manuscript copy of the Freysleben inventory is preserved at the Staatsbibliothek in Vienna (Codex 10824).
Drawings in the present manuscript include: views of the new armory in Vienna (exterior and courtyard); numerous ornate cannons and field guns, with cannon balls and auxiliary equipment; mortars; gunners' quadrants; tents of the Imperial headquarters in the field; a knight in armor with jousting lances; a solider fighting with a halberd; a soldier firing a handgun; a balance scale; a hook scale; miscellaneous pikes and spades; devices for transporting weaponry and soldiers; shields; tools; helmets; and crossbows. - Subject Terms:
