- The blank in the title is intended to be completed in manuscript with the location of the exhibit.
The zebra was brought from the Cape of Good Hope by Sir Thomas Adams, presented to Queen Charlotte in 1762, and installed in the menagerie at Buckingham Gate, where Stubbs saw and recorded it (see link herewith). The animal eventually joined the other wild and exotic animals at the Tower of London, and after its death in 1773 was exhibited around the country--as evidenced by this broadside advertising its appearance "for this day only."
The zebra was known as "the Queen's ass" and provoked some satirical verses and caricatures. See esp. British Museum Catalogue of political and personal satires, 3870. The zebra is illustrated in London Magazine (July, 1762), opp. p. 347.
