- The sketchbook is accompanied by two dated hotel bills. One bill is labeled "Près Lausanne, Hotel Beau Rivage, A. Rufenacht" with the name "Mr Mouton" written in ink above the charges. The second bill is printed with two illustrations of hotel buildings, one labeled "Hôtel Bernerhof Berne, J. Kraft & Fils, propriétaires - fondateurs," and the other labeled "Hôtel de Nice À Nice (Succursale du Bernerhof) tenu par A. & C. Kraft."
Bound in original brown bookcloth that has been embossed and backed with paper. The front cover is lettered in gilt with "Patent abraided surface sketch book."
Sketchbook containing caricatures and views from a trip that begins with a boat ride to Calais, France, but largely takes place in Switzerland. Swiss cities that are mentioned include: Bâle, Lucerne, Brienz, Giessbach, and Berne. Many of the drawings depict the people and activities encountered by the artist during his travels with "Mrs. M." (possibly as newlyweds). The drawings and their accompanying captions appear to have been first sketched in graphite and finalized in black ink. On the penultimate page, there are two caricatures in graphite of an individual orating in academic dress with a mortarboard. One caricature appears to be a parody of an illustration for Lewis Carroll's poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter." The back cover bears calculations that may be a tally of expenses, alongside a portrait sketch of two individuals, possibly the artist and his wife. - Subject Terms:
