- The Domestic and Trades College was officially founded in 1957, but grew out of an earlier institution, the Central Girls and Women's Institute, which had been in existence in Manchester since 1901. It provided evening classes to women in dressmaking and other subjects. The College also offered courses in catering, baking and confectionary, and hairdressing. In addition to these four major training areas, there were classes offered in crafts such as silversmithing, jewelry-making, and shoemaking.
The compiler of the present volume, Eileen Elizabeth Churm (1911-2008), was Head of the Clothing Department at the Domestic and Trades College. In the 1939 England and Wales register she was listed as a "Teacher of Arts and Crafts" living at 5 Grangethorpe Drive in Manchester.
Manuscript diary (or notebook), compiled by Eileen Elizabeth Churm, documenting the daily workings of the Clothing Department at the Domestic and Trades College, Manchester. The text includes mention of administrative tasks accomplished, group visits to exhibitions, interviews of prospective students, and faculty meetings. Many items of ephemera have been inserted, including newspaper clippings (stories on College students exhibiting in fashion shows at the College, news from around Manchester related to the garment industry, etc.), invitations to lectures at the College, an undated list of courses available at the College in the Clothing Department, personal photographs with handwritten notes on the reverse, and even a wedding invitation. Towards the back of the volumes, a series of ruled pages from another, slightly smaller notebook, have been inserted, documenting the activities of 1966 and 1967. - Subject Terms:
