The front cover bears the family crest of the Mackenzie family of Tarbet and Scatwell, Scotland. The album may have been assembled by (or for) Sir James John Randoll Mackenzie, Justice of the Peace for Ross and Cromarty (1814-1884). The front flyleaf is inscribed: "Helen M. Mackenzie from her father," i.e., Helen Mary Mackenzie (1917-), from her father Leslie Frederick Jackson Mackenzie (d. 1944).
Album of 40 photographs by James Mudd depicting rural scenery in the Lake District, Cheshire, Scotland, and Wales. Twenty images depict the Lake District, including Grasmere, Wasdale, an Borrowdale. Many of the picturesque scenes were familiar subjects for contemporary photographers and tourists.
Mudd is unidentified in the album, but the images correspond to his known work. An album of 30 photographs in the collections of Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum contains many of the same images; it is possible that both were made to order by the Mudd studio in Manchester. At least 25 of the photographs match descriptions of Mudd's works exhibited at various venues in the 1860s, including the 1862 International Exhibition (London), the Photographic Society (London), the Photographic Society of Scotland, the Glasgow Photographic Society, and the Architectural Photographic Association (London). - Subject Terms:
