"An epic saga that covers the origins of fashion and the industrial revolution. It's a story of progress, of modernity and of inventions that helped revolutionise the way we work, dress and live today. It's also the story of those who brought elegant clothes within reach of ordinary people. It led to a creation of a new industry based in Nottingham that was at the centre of the global trade in lace. It was lace that built and modernised the city of Nottingham and many of the surrounding towns and vilages; it also provided most of the jobs for the men and women who lived there. Today, this once mighty industry has largely disappeared from the Western world, a victim of globalisation. BAFTA nominated film-maker and journalist Edward Jarvis pieces toghether the story from the industry's dwindling band of survivors to create 'THE LACEMAKERS The Forgotten Story of English Lace"--Back cover. - Subject Terms:
