Album of photographs depicting Anne Marie Heynsen and other personnel at a German Red Cross hospital in Leipzig during World War I. The album includes 56 photographs affixed to 17 leaves of the album (with tissue guards) and a further eight loose photographs. A significant number of the images are photographic postcards; of these, some have the dimensions of a full postcard, others have been trimmed to a smaller size. Some of the postcards have writing on the verso. The photographers are unidentified. Also present is a Red Cross pin, a Red Cross armband, and a Red Cross headscarf.
The first photographic postcard in the album -- and one of the loose images -- is a studio portrait of Heynsen, in Red Cross uniform. The verso of the loose copy of the image is annotated in blue ink (translated here from the German): "Annemarie Heynsen, as nurse, Military hospital I, Leipzig 1916, born May 19, 1888 in Eutin, 28 years old." A number of the other photographs are marked with a small 'x' to identify Heynsen among a group. The last image in the album appears to depict Heynsen on a pre-war training exercise, tending to a wounded soldier. This postcard is captioned in the image: "Rote-Kreuz-Übung, Leipzig 1914, im Beisein Sr. Kgl. Hoheit des Kronprizen Georg u. Sachsen" (Red Cross exercise, Leipzig 1914, in the presence of His Royal Highness The Crown Prince Georg of Saxony).
The album provides a personalized account of Heynsen's time at the hospital. All but two of the images depict groups of her fellow nurses, doctors, and patients. The images give evidence of companionship, with many of the photographs showing groups of relaxed and smiling young women and men, at some remove from the immediate troubles of battle. A number depict wounded soldiers either in the hospital wards, or in beds taken outside to give them access to fresh air. Other images show groups of nurses in medical facilities, and perhaps an operating theater. A couple of the images show patients with musical instruments.
