Notes:: Komon refers to a variety of stencil-based textile dyeing in Japan. A komon design is one that uses very small patterns.
The volume includes 60 komon patterns (5 per page), each swatch a uniform 4 x 5 cm. Many patterns are in shades of blue, the rest in shades of brown, gray, or pale green. The final page includes four patterns of black fabric; these are described as "tokuyū kōtaku kuro" (special glossy black). To the right of each pattern is a numbering scheme, stamped in dark blue ink. Twenty-five of the patterns are also accompanied by the the number 2 (ni), stamped in red -- perhaps an indication that the pattern is made with a double stencil (nimai gata).
The name Ōtsuka Tomisaburō appears twice: stamped in red ink on page [2], next to the full place name ("Kyōto-shi Nishikikōji Shinmachi"); and alone on the back cover, stamped in gold. Ōtsuka Tomisaburō is presumably the manufacturer of the komon.
Bound in brown cloth, stamped in gold, silver, and blind. The title (Komon hyōhon kokonoe) is stamped in gold on the front cover.
