- The sketchbook records a tour down the Rhine to Switzerland made in 1844 by John Lewis Roget (1828-1908) together with his father, the physician and philologist Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869). Trained as a lawyer, John Lewis Roget was a talented watercolorist, also writing A history of the 'Old Water Colour' Society ... (London, 1891) and editing an enlarged edition of his father's famed Thesaurus (1879). Made as part of a wider European tour during 1844, during this journey Roget senior was able to revisit Geneva some forty years after his previous stay, curtailed by the outbreak of war in 1802. Sketches include but are not limited to: “On the Rhine between Cologne and Coblenz”; “The mouse tower”; “Boat on Lago Maggiore”; Castle of Ehrenbreitstein; “Bridge over the Rhine at Bale”; Cliffs of Dover; “Tower of Ghent”; Heidelberg Castle; “The Mer de Glace from the Montanvert”; Church at Soyhieres; Valley of the Kander; and more.
There are also four small inserts at the end of the volume, two of which are done in watercolor. Though the volume itself dates to 1844, two of the four inserts are dated 1874 and 1891, respectively. One is a watercolor showing the backside of a cathedral with text in the bottom right corner that reads “S. Quentin, Aug. 1874”. The second is a letter written to John Lewis that begins, “Dear Mr. Roget, Your sketches have been much admired...” - Subject Terms:
