Anne Beresford Cosby (d. 1872) was the daughter of Edward Stopford, Archdeacon of Armagh, and later Bishop of Meath. In 1859 she married John Hamilton Wilder Cosby, a Dublin barrister. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and admitted to Gray's Inn, London, in 1849. The couple appear not to have had any children.

The first section of the album illustrates travels to Norway, perhaps for Cosby's honeymoon. Cosby appears to have relied on Thomas Forrester's 1853 expanded edition of Edward Price's Norway and Its Scenery (1833); a few of the illustrations from that work have been inserted in the album. The majority of illustrations are drawings by Cosby. Locales depicted include Trondhiem, Meelhuus (Melhus), Soknoes (Soknedal), Bjekager (Berkåk), Bolseth, Hals Fjord, Lonsoet (Lønset), Veblungsnaeset (Veblungsnes), and Christiania (Oslo). Cosby's captions for drawings range in length from a single word to a full paragraph. The longer captions appear to be copied from text in one or more contemporary guidebooks.
Cosby's drawings display a fondness for wild landscape, rural architecture, churches, waterfalls, plants, sledges and peasant carts. The base for the Cosby's travels may have been the present day Toftemo hotel, a coaching inn built in 1820 according to current accounts. Cosby notes that the site was in use from the twelfth century, and at the time she made her watercolors the heirlooms in their rooms dated to the 1540s.
The album also illustrates travels to Copenhagen and to Germany, the latter especially in Weissenfels and Cologne. It is unclear whether the content was accumulated during multiple trips. In this section, Cosby again documents buildings, landscapes and interiors but also includes lithographs and other prints to supplement her own work. There are a number of tinted lithographs depicting notable sights in Denmark, after drawings by Heinrich Hansen, published by P.G. Philipsens Forlag (Copenhagen). The end of the volume includes assorted prints depicting Cologne Cathedral. - Subject Terms:
