Notes:
The artist and poet David Jones served at the western front with the Royal Welch Fusiliers from 1915 to 1918. The sketch probably dates from the early 1930s while Jones was working on his epic poem In Parenthesis.
The sketch depicts a soldier walking, head bowed, in helmet and coat, carrying a rifle. Features of the face are obscured.
