Classification:
Three-Dimensional Artifacts
Notes:
The plate illustrates the character originally known as Huldebrand, from the fairy-tale novella Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué (first published in 1811). In 1814 Undine was adapted into a highly successful opera, with music by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Undine was the subject of multiple toy theater productions in the early 19th century, including material published by G. Creed. and I. Jameson. A print made from the present plate would likely have been sold plain for coloring and tinseling at home (or “a penny plain and twopence coloured”).
The plate is captioned "St. Uldibrand" and bears the imprint of G. Bishop & Co. It depicts the knight Uldibrand on horseback, in full armor, with a fort in the background. The collections of the Museum of London include a print of the same image (see link herewith), with varying imprint: "London: Pub. by J.L. Marks, Long Lane, Smithfield." Neither version of the image is dated, but the period of activity of John Lewis Marks (ca. 1817-1855) generally precedes that of G. Bishop & Co. (ca. 1840-1870). The image may have been first engraved and published by Marks, with Bishop subsequently reusing the same plate (with new imprint).
