- Notes:
- Martin Beckman was appointed "chief engineer of all His Majesty's castles forts, blockhouses and other fortifications in England, Wales and Berwick" in 1677. He was the chief engineer for the design of Hull Citadel, in 1681. An initial plan by Bernard De Gomme, also in the YCBA collections (see: Folio C 2010 6f) "seems to lay down broad guide-lines for Beckman, who ultimately produced a more coherent design" (see: Saunders, A. Fortress builder, pages 229-231). Beckman supervised the work of construction in 1682-1683.
Provenance: From the collection of George Legge, first Baron Dartmouth, 1648-1691 (see Sotheby's sale, March 8-10, 1948). Baron Dartmouth was Master-General of the Ordnance to Charles II and James II. His collection of maps was partly abstracted from Royal map collections, an arrangement described by Pepys in Bodleian Library MS Rawl. A. 171, 17r-20v. See also Skelton and Wallis.
Title devised by cataloger.
All sheets are mounted on cloth.
Yale Center for British Art collections also include Bernard de Gomme's original plan for the Citadel at Hull (see: Folio C 2010 6f) and two plans of the Citadel signed by King Charles II, perhaps drawn by Martin Beckman (see: Folio C 2010 6g).
