"The prodigious undertaking placed a severe strain on the rudimentary facilities of the Reading establishment and probably necessitated the cutting of corners to save time. The disastrous result became evident shortly after the journal was published in June 1846, when all seven thousand prints began to fade ..."--Taylor. Impressed by light.
The article may have been written by W.H.F. Talbot. See: Gernsheim, Incunabula.
The plate is a mounted photograph (calotype) by W.H.F. Talbot. The images vary among copies (subscriptions to Art union numbered about 7000). At least 13 different images were employed, including some which also appeared in Talbot's The pencil of nature and Sun pictures in Scotland.
The mounted photograph sometimes has a letterpress caption pasted beneath, and/or a letterpress label pasted on the reverse: "Patent Talbotype or sun pictures". Labels are known with added text: "A great variety of specimens on sale at Messrs. Brooks (Brothers), 87, New Bond Street, London."
