"Hundreds of moving panoramas were painted in the ninteenth century. In Great Britain, they toured every town of any consequence. It is extraordinary, therefore, that not a single example of this popular medium, a forerunner of films and the cinema, seems to have survived in Great Britain. The only known example of a British moving show panorama is in the United States, in a private collection in Greenwich, Connecticut. It is devoted to "The Campaigns of Garibaldi". This Burford Garibaldi panarama tells the stroy from Garibaldi's youth up to his triumphal entry into Naples with Victor Emmanuel in 1860. It covers not only his campaigns in Europe, for uniting Italy, but also touches on his earlier campaigns of liberation in South America. In 1862, Anthony Burford, a member of a Cotswold family, who had emigrated to the United States in 1854, returned to Great Britain on a visit. He found this panorama in Nottingham and was able to purchase it from Mr. J.J. Story, a scenic painter. Mr. Burford brought the panorama back to the United States and attempted to show it, but had little success. It was put into storage by his daughter-in-law Clarrissa, wife of Robert Burford, and eventually inherited by Grace Burford, an active member of the International Panorama Diorama Society. She, in turn, gave it to her nephew Dr. James Smith in about 1980. With the help of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and many others, including Mr. Dennis Powers, a film Director/Producer, modern technology has made it possible to transfer this 143-year old painted panorama in DVD format.
