- Notes:
- The artist Henry Fitzcook (b. 1824) achieved primary success as an illustrator of books, including a number of books intended for children. In the mid-1860s, he was a significant proponent of the graphotype process, a form of relief printing using chalk blocks as a matrix.
Seven highly finished drawings by Henry Fitzcook, for a work that is apparently unpublished. The first drawing is a title leaf, "Poems in pen & pencil by H. Fitzcook." Two of the drawings are dated 1846. Despite the pencil named in the title, the text and drawings are entirely in black ink. Each sheet is framed by a contemporary mount, bordered in gold.
The seven drawings present are probably a fragment of the full intended work. In addition to the title sheet, there are at least three poems, all original. For each sheet, verse is richly augmented in the margins with drawings by Fitzcook. A one-page "Sonnet" praises "genius rare." Two sheets are devoted to the dark fate of sailors on "The plague ship"; this poem appears incomplete. The remaining three sheets appear to belong to a single poem, the beginning of which is lacking. Its varied drawings include depictions of a sylvan camp fire and ancient Egypt.
The prints have been preserved in a portfolio with other material compiled by Fitzcook, including: Nine prints, by various artists, published in: Divine and moral songs for children, by Isaac Watts (1867?), cataloged separately (see link provided herewith) -- "The interpreter shewing Christian passion and patience," a wood engraving by Samuel Williams from The pilgrim's progress (1840) -- A sketch in graphite by Fitzcook, titled "The return of Enoch Arden," presumably intended as an illustration for the poem by Tennyson (but unpublished). - Subject Terms:
