Shirley, R.W. Printed maps of the British Isles, 1650-1750, Morden 4
BAC: British Art Center copy is uncolored. The map was formerly laid in as map 9 in a composite atlas issued by Henry Overton, numbered black ink at top right.
This is one of the earliest general maps to show the roads of England, Wales, and Scotland, based on the work of John Ogilby in Britannia (1675). It is noteworthy also for the elaborate genealogical chart at the right, which traces English sovereigns from William I ("the Conqueror," reigned 1066-1687) to Charles II (reigned 1660-1685).
"Morden's single-sheet map of the British Isles ... follows the Morden and Greene wall map of 1674 in its new rendering of Ireland where the Connaught peninsula in particular is given its modern western-protruding form. Morden also marks the roads between the main towns in Scotland as well as in England and Wales, but not - as in his large map of 1674 - in Ireland."--Shirley.
"Morden's map was first advertised in the Term catalogues for 1678 under the names of Morden and John Overton."--Shirley. - Subject Terms:
