Notes:
Bridge Hill House, in Belper, was built between 1793 and 1795 for George Benson Strutt and lived in by the Strutt family until it was demolished in the 1930s. At the time of the present album, the owner may have been George Herbert Strutt (1854-1928). The Strutts were prominent Derbyshire cotton manufacturers and philanthropists. Three lodge houses and the head gardener's house still stand.
Bound in contemporary brown buckram, with decorative pattern stamped in black on front cover.
Album of 12 photographs, compiled circa 1900, depicting Bridge Hill House, in Belper, Derbyshire. Several photos also depict its inhabitants. All photographs are gelatin silver prints and measure 15 x 20 cm, in a mixture of landscape and portrait orientations. The photographs are inserted within pre-cut windows of uniform size, on rectos and versos of the album's heavy paper leaves. The album bears no contemporary inscriptions.
The architecture and decor of the house are the focus of the album, which may have been a gift to a member of staff. The first photograph is a portrait of a female servant with two younger maids. Her demeanor suggests she was a senior servant, perhaps the housekeeper. The album comprises views of the rooms, including a library and picture gallery, and the gardens' pristine flowerbeds and lawn. The photograph of a conservatory interior filled with blossoms and another of a small summer party outdoors (with some attendees playing croquet) hint at the luxury of the Strutts' lifestyle. Yet the overall impression is a personal memento of an immaculately kept grand house.
