BAC Folio A 2014 2 Copy 1: The Abbey copy (printed in color). With 100 engravings. Lacks index leaf. Bound in contemporary green half morocco with marble boards. Red label with title.
BAC Folio A 2014 2 Copy 2: Comprises 91 proofs of engravings, unbound, on paper watermarked 1794, 1795, and 1797. With 63 printed in multiple colors (of which 23 have been heightened by a contemporary hand, 11 are uncolored, and 17 are uncolored duplicates of colored plates). Includes index leaf. Has laid in: leaf 9 from William Milns' The penman's repository (London, 1787); and leaf 2 from Milns' Round hand alphabet (London, [1794]).
The standard version comprised 180 engravings. Apparently, a small number of copies were printed in multiple colors, à la poupée--and all such copies may contain an incomplete set of the engravings. Abbey Scenery 5 (now in the collections of the Yale Center for British Art; Folio A 2014 2 copy 1) comprises 100 engravings; Abbey notes: "the figures and smaller details are coloured by hand, and in some places, especially the skies, the printed colour is accentuated with a light wash. Although the titles are in black, the imprints usually take the nearest colour. This is a special copy; no other is known that is actually printed in colour." A second copy, of 91 engravings, unbound, partially printed à la poupée, is also now in the collections of the Yale Center for British Art (Folio A 2014 2 copy 2).
