Manuscript record book documenting the trout fishing activity of Leonard Enig Phillips of Abergavenny, Wales, between 1936 and 1942. The volume records Phillips's fishing at Ashford, Kent, while stationed in the army. In great detail, it notes each catch, its weight, whether Rainbow or Brown Trout, and the location of the day's fishing. The manuscript came by descent from the family, and a note by Thomas Richard Phillips records that his great grandfather wrote The Breconshire Border.
Phillips's trout fishing records are followed by his observations and extracts from various books on the topic of fishing, including R.A. Chrystal's Angling theories and methods (1927), and J.W. Dunne's The fly on the water (1930). There is also an extensive extract from Charles A.N. Wauton's Troutfishers' entomology, an elementary treatise on natural flies (1930). This latter section includes illustrations of flies and ties, drawn variously in pen and ink or graphite.
