With two ballads affixed to most leaves (rectos only).
Bound in contemporary gilt-tooled morocco; binding is signed: "Bound for George Rutland [bookseller], Newcastle-on-Tyne."
Album of 162 ballads, many with small woodcuts at the head of the ballad sheet. Most of the sheets are printed by John Pitts or Thomas Birt, at Seven Dials, London. Tipped in at front is a letter from Jane Bewick (daughter of the wood engraver Thomas Bewick) to Edward Basil Jupp, dated July 3, 1869. She notes: "I may hazard a conjecture ... the ballad singers may possibly have been done for [Joseph] Ritson. My father furnished him with many communications on the subject of ballad lore ..." The volume also bears the bookplate of Robert Spence, by Bewick.
