Notes:
Robert Trollope was a 17th century English architect, born in Yorkshire, who worked mainly in Northumberland and Durham. He was also the architect of Netherwitton Hall and the old Exchange at Newcastle. Osbourne's Fort, more commonly known as Fort on the Heugh, is situated on the southern edge of Holy Island, Northumberland. It is understood to have been built in 1675 to house guns, in order to help to protect the small harbor known as the Ouse, and apparently in response to the threat of Dutch privateers on the east. A plan of the fort by M. Beckman dated 1683 states "Platforms and redoubt made and designed by Dan. Collingwood Esquire and Mr Robt. Trollope."
View inscribed: Osbournes Fort. Anno Dom. 1676. Trollup fecit.
Plan inscribed: The ground platt of Osbourne's fort. Anno Dom. 1676. Trollup fecit.
Paper watermaked with fleur de lis surmounted by a crown.

Watercolors (one plan and one view) of Osbourne's Fort, Holy Island, Northumberland, by Robert Trollope, 1676. The view depicts the fort in its finished state, with corner turrets along the outer wall and the central tower with steeply pitched roofs. The plan shows a figure firing a canon out to sea. Both depict a single ship in the waters surrounding the fort. Both items are signed "Trollup" and dated in pen and ink.
