Trade card for William Herring, a dealer in birds, water fowl, fish and dogs. Includes five engraved illustrations, depicting a fox, swan, deer, peacock and pheasant. Signed (beneath the fox): "F. Mansell, 6 Cobham Row, Cold Bh. [i.e. Coldbath] Sq."
Frederick Mansell was trading at Coldbath Square in 1833 and 1834. See: Worms, L. British map engravers.
The Post Office directory of 1840 lists William Herring, menagerie, at 21 Quickset Row, New Road.
William Herring became proprietor of the menagerie on New Road in 1813, following prior ownership by Joshua Brookes (d. 1803) and Paul Brookes. See: Plumb, C. The Georgian menagerie. London : I.B. Tauris, 2015 (pages 31-33). Herring was the original owner of Jacques Laurent Agasse's Zebra (1803), an oil painting now in the collection of the Yale Center for British Art.
