Three sketchbooks by Cuthbert Morley Headlam, containing a total of 83 drawings and caricatures. Most of the drawings are in pen and black ink; many with watercolor, and most with captions. Headlam, later a prominent Conservative politician and a noted diarist, evidently honed his powers of detailed observation as a young man. These sketchbooks date from his late teens and early twenties, and two are records of visits to France and Switzerland. The third volume contains 31 accurate studies copied from Tenniel, including several from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
In 1895 Headlam was in Paris, sketching fashionable walkers on the Champs Elysées and the Bois de Boulogne, before moving on to the Loire Valley where he captured numerous finely-rendered scenes of local characters about their daily business. His sketches from his visit to St Moritz the following year are no less charming, if perhaps a little stereotyped. Here he focused on figures, mostly without backgrounds, of hearty housewives and bearded pipe-smokers. Headlam's style is crisp and concise, with careful wash infills. His diaries have been praised for their shrewd analysis of character, lucid prose and anecdotal quality (see ODNB), and the same qualities are amply shown by these early sketchbooks.
