John Henney (1791-1869) began work at the Bank of England in 1814, eventually becoming the "Sub Agent" of the Portsmouth branch of the Bank. He retired after 53 years, in 1867. In original sheep wallet-style binding, with overflap and integral pockets front and rear.
Holograph diary kept by John Henney in 1814, while he began employment at the Bank of England. Diary entries are written in pen and black ink, on blank leaves interleaves into a copy of Vox Stellarum; or, a Loyal Almanack for 1814. Henney takes lodgings at Mrs. Harding's, catches a cold, and suffers a toothache. He notes accounts, letters sent and received, wages, and a few personal notes of births &c.
Sample page, from March 1814: "Mar. 3 Left Trentham & arrived in London March 4. 5. Examined at the Bank. 8. Delivered my petition & other papers at the Bank. 9. Examined by the committee at the Bank. 10. Elected to a situation at the Bank of England. 12. Sent the bonds for securities to Trentham, rec'd them back on the 16th and delivered them at the Bank on the 17th, when W. Lock signed his. 17. Salary committed at Bank. 18. First day's attendance at the Bank."
