Manuscript field notebook compiled by Montague Egerton Loftus, circa 1882. It includes numerous sketches, in graphite or in pen and ink, including subjects such as: military defenses, a double bridge head, a profile of flanks of the Plevna redoubt, a wire entanglement, cuttings and embankments, beams, a single truss bridge, knots, Boxer's Shrapnell for a 7 inch M.L., a snatch block for derrick raising, bivouacks, a crenelated wall, a gun epaulment, sandbag loopholes, and a reconnaissance formula. There are also several sketched maps, noting enemy positions. One plan of a wood, indicating skirmishes, and gun placements, is dated May 3rd 1882. It notes matters of importance to the "lines of advance of our army."
The Plevna redoubt refers to defences constructed during the Siege of Plevna during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). Montagu Egerton Loftus was British Consulate at Cherbourg, and also Vice-Consul in Corsica and a King's Messenger. He was the third son of Lord Augustus Loftus, diplomat, and Envoy Extraordinary to the Emperor of Austria.
