Notes:
"Three of the maps are dated 1599, and 21 are signed by the engraver Petrus Kaerius, i.e. Pieter van den Keere ... ; the unsigned maps are drawn and engraved in the same style."--Skelton.
"The 33 maps of the English and Welsh counties are derived from those of Saxton ... Yorkshire is omitted ... The six Scottish maps are derived from Ortelius' Scotland; the five Irish maps from the map of Ireland engraved by Van den Keere in 1591 after B. Boazio."--Skelton.
The maps were later reprinted by W.J. Blaeu in an epitome of William Camden's "Britannia", 1617, and by George Humble in his edition of John Speed's miniature atlas of the British Isles ca. 1619. Enlarged editions were published from 1627 to 1676.
Relief shown pictorially.
Title supplied by cataloger.
Skelton, R.A. County atlases of the British Isles, 1579-1850, 4
Burden, P.D. "The origins of the 'miniature' Speed atlas." In: Mappae antiquae (2007), p. 497-508
BAC: British Art Center copy is no. 7 in Burden's census (mistakenly noted as "acquired by a dealer, broken, and distributed") and copy "c" in Skelton's census (p. 210).
BAC: British Art Center copy imperfect: lacks Ulster. With contemporary hand-coloring throughout. Bound in later morocco. Has bound with it four roundel maps engraved by William Kip (London, ca. 1602), each cataloged separately: Academiarum totius Europae -- Angliae descpiptio [sic] -- Galliae descriptio -- Belgiae descriptio [in the form of Leo Belgicus]. This series also included a roundel world map, lacking here. The roundel maps and Van den Keere's atlas appear to be colored in the same hand.
The first atlas of the entire British Isles (earlier Saxton atlases had been concerned exclusively with England). Comprises 44 maps of the English and Welsh counties, the regions of Scotland, and the Irish provinces. A proof set of the maps, found, as usual, without title or accompanying text (see Skelton and Burden).
