Selected exhibitions: "'Of Green Leaf, Bird, and Flower': Artists' Books and the Natural World" (Yale Center for British Art, May 15 - August 10, 2014).
Album of 96 specimens of pressed wild flowers collected in England from 1882 to 1899. The identity of the collector or collectors is unknown. Each specimen is affixed to a sheet of white paper serving as a background, which in turn is pasted to one of the gray paper leaves of the album. Generally, the specimens are one to a page (rectos only), but where the specimens are small there are sometimes two per page. Accompanying each specimen is a hand-written label mounted at the base of the white paper background. The label identifies the specimen's common name, Latin name, natural order (ordo naturalis), location where found, and (inconsistently) date collected. The label for the undated first specimen, for example, reads: "Blue flea-bane, Erigeron acris, Nat. Ord. Compositae, from a wall in the Hampton Road."
A sampling of specimens includes: greater bird's-foot trefoil, common yarrow, sea wormwood, meadow vetchling, meadow cranesbill, common broom, rock rose, purple loostrife, scarlet pimpernel, yellow melilot, stinking chamomile, common agrimony, pale-flowered Persicaria, twayblade, corn spurrey, Dutch clover, black knapweed, snowberry, sweet woodruff, and marsh marigold.
Most of the specimens were collected in or around Bath or Hastings. Other named locales include Englishcombe, Weston, the Dundas Aqueduct, Sydney Gardens, Corsham, Kelston, Charlcombe, Hampton Downs, Box, Portland, and Weymouth.
Writing on the labels appears to be in multiple hands. The labels of some of the later specimens (especially those from 1899) are in a less mature hand, suggesting the possibility that the album was started by a young woman and continued by her child.
